3 Tips for Safe and Effective Car Windshield Repair

Did you know that tiny chip in your windshield can make your glass up to 70% weaker than an undamaged windshield?

A few years ago, safety would demand you replace the glass. That little chip would grow to a giant crack, and then you would be stuck with a huge bill for replacement. Luckily, car windshield repair technology has advanced in the past few years, so that no longer holds true. Now you can repair your windshield almost invisibly, with a resin that is stronger than glass.

Not all repairs are equal though. Read on to learn more about key safety issues when fixing glass chips and cracks.

It’s All About the Damage

Auto safety glass is made of two strong layers of glass held in place by a layer of vinyl. The vinyl is vital to your safety in a rollover or impact accident that deploys airbags. And it helps keep you inside the car while keeping dangerous debris out.

Any damage to the layers that does not penetrate all the way through is potentially repairable. In general:

  • Most repair technicians claim that rock chips are easily and invisibly fixable when fresh. Otherwise, the starburst of micro-cracks around the tiny chip expands under the smallest stresses.
  • Insurance company claims teams recommend repairs over replacement.
  • Cracks up to 6 inches long can be repaired, as long as the crack intercepts no more than one edge of the glass. Likewise, as long as you have no more than three chips and the repair area isn’t in front of a camera or sensor, your repair is good to go.

Car Windshield Repair Process

The sooner you can get a glass chip repaired, the better the repair will be. That’s because over time, dust and dirt become embedded in the chip. That debris makes it difficult for the polymer resin to adhere.

First, the technician will assess the damage, then clean the surface with an alcohol or acetone-based solvent. Then, a strong polymer is injected into the crack or chip. A small suction cup is then applied to the area to create a gentle vacuum while the polymer cures.

Once the resin is cured, the area is polished smooth. Most of the time the imperfection is barely noticeable. The resin is optically clear and stronger than the glass itself.

Remember to check the qualifications of the technician making the assessment and repair. There are plenty of car windshield repair shops in New Berlin, but choose the wrong one and you could regret it. While small scratches are often repairable yourself, an amateur job on a larger crack can make the glass worse, not better.

But Is It Safe?

There are certain factors which make auto windshield replacement a better choice. For instance:

  • If there are more than three chips in the glass or the damage is in the driver’s direct line of vision, the repairs may interfere with visibility.
  • You must consider the weatherproof seal around the windshield. Damage to the seal weakens the structural integrity of the vehicle and can affect collision safety. This is important because windshields play a critical role in airbag deployment.

4 Tips for Choosing the Best Car Body Shop in Muskego

While many customers want loyalty from mechanics, you’d be surprised to find that auto shops want the same from their customers. The ability to build a trusting relationship is in everyone’s interest, so finding a good car body shop to work with is great for everyone.

Here are four tips to abide by when searching for a Muskego body shop worth building a relationship with.

Tips for Finding the Best Body Shop in Your Area

1. Pick Someone Who’s Close to You

The first thing to do is to narrow down your choices to the ones nearest to you. If you recently got into an accident, you probably don’t want to travel far with your vehicle. Towing your car costs money, so finding a nearby body shop is a matter of saving money.

Searching online is a great way to narrow down which body shops are nearest you. You can usually set a range with online searches to ensure that you don’t get a lot of results that are irrelevant to your location.

2. Check Out Reviews

Location isn’t everything, however. You need to also concern yourself with the quality of the service you’re going to get. It’s definitely worth traveling an extra mile to get the best service in town.

Online reviews don’t give you the full picture of what makes an auto body shop good, but it can give you some idea. While you should always take online reviews with a grain of salt, you can get an idea of the kind of experience to expect from a body shop.

Online reviews might even come in from someone who has had the same problem with the same vehicle you have. This can give you deep insight.

3. Find Out What Their Specialty Is

Make a note of the specialty of a body shop when you’re looking into it. Some shops specialize in German cars while others do restoration on classic American cars. Depending on their specialty, you can better understand the service you’ll be getting.

Going to a body shop because they specialize in cars like yours is often a much smarter option than going for a jack of all trades, especially if you have an uncommon or special type of vehicle.

4. See If They Listen to You

When you talk to your body shop specialist, do you feel that they are listening to what you want from them? Having the work done the way that you want it done is vital.

If you don’t feel that they’re going to take the work as seriously as you need them to, you need to check out a different body shop. Any body shop worth your time will value you as a customer and either talk to you about why something can’t be done or do things your way.

Choose Your Car Body Shop Carefully

When you’re looking for a repair shop, choosing carefully is the best thing you can do to ensure that you get what you want and need. Every make and model has its own particularities, and a great repair team will respect that.

To ensure that your work gets done quickly, follow our guide for tips. And, if you need a body shop now, don’t hesitate to contact us to schedule an appointment.

How Often Should You Get Your Car Detailed?

Let’s be real: Nothing beats the feeling of stepping into a clean car. Between the spotless interior and the “new car” smell, a clean car can feel like a new place for both new and seasoned car owners.

But is it possible keep the same clean-car feel after years of use? This is what vehicle detailing is for. When you get your car detailed, a detailing expert does everything from vacuuming the interior to degreasing and polishing the exterior.

So, this leaves us with the million dollar question: How often should you get your car detailed? Let’s talk about it.

How Often Should You Get Your Car Detailed?

If you want to prolong the life and protect the longevity of your vehicle, getting your car detailed is going to be one of the most important things. But can you really detail your car often without causing damage? Let’s take a look at the facts.

There’s No Such Thing as Too Much

Even though it may seem like a bit much, there is no such thing as too much car detailing. As a matter of fact, some experts recommend you get your car detailed as much as once a week. Not only does this keep your car in great condition, but it prevents stains and future damage to your vehicle.

If You Can’t Get Your Car Detailed Every Week, Then What?

Let’s be honest: Getting your car detailed can get expensive and not everyone can afford to get it done once a week. What you can do, however, is follow best practice. And, as a general rule of thumb, it’s recommended you get your car detailed at least 3-4 times a year. This number, however, varies based on how often the car is used.

Why Is Car Detailing So Important Anyway?

From the outside looking in, getting your car detailed can seem like an unnecessary expense. After all, why not just get it washed for half the price?

When it comes to the never-ending argument between car washes and car detailing, there are certain benefits that come with car detailing that you won’t get with a regular wash.

For instance, car detailing focuses on every inch of your car. Because the expert uses potent chemicals to remove stains, car detailing gets your vehicle closest to brand new.

In addition, getting your car detailed can prolong the life of your engine in the long run. While getting this service done, the technician often inspects your engine and removes any debris that might cause your car future problems.

4 Tips for Saving Money On Auto Repair After a Car Accident

There are over 6 million car accidents in the United States every year. And, unfortunately for some people, their insurance doesn’t cover the cost of these repairs.

Paying for car accident repairs, even small ones, can take a lot of money out of your pocket. If your insurance doesn’t cover your car damages, make sure you read these four tips that’ll help you save money on your auto body repair.

image of money

1. Don’t Make Any Financial Decisions Right Away

Sometimes this can’t be helped, but if you can, avoid making any financial decisions about your car repair right after the accident. Give yourself a chance to calm down.

Don’t think about when and where to tow your car. Or what kind of repairs you’ll have to make. Or how much money it will cost. Instead, call the police, make sure the accident is reported the right way, and get some medical attention.

If you don’t give yourself this time to calm down, you might end up making hasty repair decisions. This can lead to spending more money than you actually need to spend.

Your main concern after an accident should be on your safety and the safety of anyone else involved in the accident. All the financial decisions can wait until later.

2. Find a Reputable Auto Body Shop

Reputable companies won’t overcharge you, and they have certified technicians to work on your car. If you don’t already have a trusted auto body shop, ask your friends and family members for recommendations. You can also read online reviews from platforms like Yelp and Google.

It’s typically a good idea to choose a local shop for your car repairs. Local body shops rely on word of mouth and referral business to get their names out there, so they often focus on offering good prices. You can often be sure they’ll provide good repairs with excellent customer service too.

3. Shop Around and Get Multiple Different Quotes

You can save money on your car repairs if you shop around for the best deal first. Many shops offer competitor price matching, and others will charge less than competitors in order to attract your business.

So, don’t just stick with the shop that towed your car away from the crash site.

If you can’t drive your car after the accident, ask the shop that towed your car for a quote. After that, call other auto body shops in the area to find out how much they will charge for the same repairs.

This will show you what an acceptable price is and which auto shops overcharge.

4. Always Check for Warning Signs

Just because the outside of your car seems fine, doesn’t mean all is fine. There could be damage inside the engine you can’t see. Driving with this damage could make your car worse or put you and your passengers in danger. If you address issues right away, they may not cost as much to repair either.

Always take your car to an auto body shop after an accident, even if you can’t see any of the damages yourself.

Do Your Best to Prevent Auto Body Care

An important part of saving money on auto body repairs is to prevent the damages from happening in the first place. Of course, this isn’t always possible. But whenever you can, do your best to keep your car out of harm’s way. That includes maintaining your car and driving well.

How to Get Your Car Accident Damages Repaired Fast

If you spend enough time behind the wheel of a car, chances are you’re eventually going to get into an accident. In fact, the average American driver is in an accident about once every 18 years.

Accidents can be scary for a number of reasons. You can get hurt and even killed in one. You can also be forced to seek repairs on accident damages afterwards.

If you need collision repair after an accident, you should act quickly. The quicker you act, the less likely your vehicle will end up in the shop for weeks or months afterwards.

Here are our tips to get your car fixed after an accident.

Contact the Police

The first thing you should do after getting into an auto accident is call the local police and tell them about it. They will send a police officer down to the scene to figure out what happened.

As a lawyer will tell you, when speaking with the other drivers involved in a crash and the police, don’t assume liability for the accident. Simply tell the police what you remember and exchange insurance information with your fellow drivers before you and your vehicle leave the scene.

Reach Out to Your Auto Insurance Company

While you’re waiting for police to arrive at the accident scene, you should get in touch with your auto insurance company. They will let you know what you need to do next to get your car repaired. They can also arrange to have your car towed to one of their approved facilities in the area.

Your insurance policy may or may not cover a tow truck. You should speak with your auto insurance provider about what’s covered under your plan.

Take Your Car to an Auto Body Shop for an Estimate

Once the accident scene has cleared, you should get your car to an auto body shop approved by your insurance right away. Whether that means having it towed or driving it yourself, there is no time to waste.

The sooner you get your vehicle to an auto body shop, the sooner you will receive an accident estimate on how much it will cost to fix your vehicle.

Your insurance company will usually work directly with the auto body shop to determine how much damage was done and what auto accident repairs need to be made. There may be some back and forth between your insurance company and the auto body shop. This is why it’s important to get your car to the shop as quickly as you can from the beginning.

Have Repairs Made

After your insurance company and auto body shop have ironed out the details, repairs on your vehicle can begin.

There are several things that can delay the repair process. In some cases, an auto body shop will need to wait for parts to be delivered. In others, your insurance company might drag their feet on approving certain repairs.

You should maintain contact with both your insurance company and the auto body shop throughout the process. By staying on top of both sides, you can get your vehicle repaired and get back out on the road in no time.

Get Accident Damages Repaired Quickly

If you’re like most people, when you send your car into the repair shop, you want to have all of your problems fixed the right way. You also want to get your car back as soon as possible. That’s where we come in.

Contact us to schedule repairs for accident damages. Our body repair shop is located in Muskego, and we guarantee your vehicle will be fixed in a timely fashion.

How to Fix and Protect a Scratched Windshield

One of the most annoying things is seeing a scratch in your car’s windshield. Having your sunny day suddenly switched from happy and carefree to worrying about how to fix a scratched windshield is not anyone’s idea of a good time.

The good news is, in most cases, there are ways to get scratches out of glass. Depending on the size and depth of the scratch, you have a few options available to you.

Here are some tips on windshield restoration and ways to avoid windshield scratches in the first place.

technician repairing windshield

Windshield Scratch Prevention

You can prevent windshield scratches by knowing how windshields get damaged in the first place. Dust, dirt, and other grit that accumulates on windshields can scratch your windshield anytime you turn the wipers on.

Here are some tips to help you keep the damages to a minimum:

  • Avoid leaving dirt on the windshield.
  • Park indoors or under cover.
  • Drive carefully.
  • Do not run your windshield wipers dry.
  • Keep your wiper fluid topped off.
  • Perform regular inspections.

How to Fix a Scratched Windshield

No matter how bad your windshield damage is, try to get it repaired as soon as possible. Remember: Scratches on your windshield can spread, leading to more damage. Leaving the damage there can also cause visibility problems, affecting your vision in the sun or at night.

If your windshield is scratched and you do not want professional glass repair, you can try to remove the scratches yourself. It’s important to remember that you may, however, make your windshield worse.

If you’re unsure of your equipment or technical abilities, it is always best to get professional help.

Prepare the Surface

Glass repair kits are readily available online. You want a glass repair kit because they are made with ingredients that are designed specifically for windshield restoration. A glass repair kit will either repair the problem or get you as close as possible without a professional glass technician present.

Just follow the directions on the glass repair kit to get started. Ideally, you want the surface to be as clean as possible. That way the rubbing compound used in the next phase can do its job correctly.

Use a Rubbing Compound to Seal Scratches

Next, you will need a rubbing compound to seal the scratches. Make sure that you get a rubbing compound with cerium oxide, as this is the main ingredient that actually repairs your glass.

You want to follow the directions that come with the compound after you clean and prepare the surface. Your rubbing compound should be about the consistency of toothpaste when you apply it.

Rub the compound in a circular motion, and leave a thin layer on the glass to dry.

Allow the Compound to Dry

Once the compound dries (generally in around 30 minutes), you can wash it off and dry the area with a dry towel. This process should repair minor scratches, but for deeper gouges and cracks, you may need professional help.

Keep in mind that you may need to repeat this process again at a later date. This method just seals (fills) the scratches and does not permanently fix the problem.

Also, although these are not methods that we recommend, people have also used toothpaste, metal polish, baking soda, and even nail polish to remove scratches.

Want Professional Help Instead?

Because of the potential costs if your windshield restoration project goes awry, it’s typically better to get professional help when it comes to auto glass repair. If you don’t want to risk it, stop in at our shop in Muskego or click here for a windshield repair estimate.

Car Detailing: A Beginner’s Guide

About 8 million cars are washed every day in the US. But, this doesn’t imply that every car owner washes their car. Some just don’t have time, while others keep on rescheduling their vehicle cleanings.

Car detailing and washing is important if you want that sparkling, new-like shine on your car. As such, in this post, we’re going to take you through the straightforward steps of keeping your car clean. Read on to learn more.

Get the Right Tools and Materials

If you want to give your car the shine you want, then arming yourself with the right tools matters. A decent vacuum cleaner with hand-held attachments and extension hose is necessary. If you have a steam cleaning machine, add it to the arsenal, too.

You’ll also need cleaning products for your carpets, plastic, upholstery, and vinyl. Be sure to read your car’s manual to determine the ideal chemical products for cleaning. A set of microfiber cloth, rags, and towels are necessary for wiping and polishing.

Also, ensure you have applicators and brushes for cleaning vents and those areas that are hard to reach.

Vents and Dashboard

Our tips:

  • Before the car detailing process, remove all the floor mats and carpets, as they’re usually the dirtiest. You can clean those later.
  • Clean the vents using a sponge brush or a cotton swab dipped in a multipurpose cleaner. Something slightly rough will be ideal to scrub away dirt and remove allergens.
  • Use a rag to clean your dashboard using water and a cleaning solution.
  • Allow it to dry, then use a clean rag to apply a small amount of a jelly-based product, such Vaseline. Don’t apply too much jelly as it will attract dust. This will give your dashboard the right shine.

Seats and Door Panels

Cleaning your seats depends on the type of material they have. The typical options include leather, cloth upholstery, and vinyl.

  • For leather seats, use a leather cleaning product with a towel. After washing, allow the seats to dry, and then apply a leather conditioner.
  • Cloth upholstery is usually hard to clean because it’s prone to nasty odors and tough stains. You will need a stain remover and upholstery cleaner to make it clean.

Windows and Mirrors

A microfiber cloth and glass cleaner are ideal for glass surfaces during vehicle detailing. If you have tinted windows, be cautious since some tinting is an added layer of the real glass. During cleaning, don’t spray the cleaner to the glass. Instead, spray on to the rag that you’re using to clean.

The Exterior

When washing the exterior of the car, use a soft, round brush with bristles and a super soft, slick car wash shampoo. Make sure to use grit guards with your buckets to get particles out of your mitt or sponge.

Clean those hard to reach areas, such as the fuel filler compartment and bumper gaps, using a soft brush. Remember to clean the rims and the grill of your car. When you’re sure they’re clean, rinse with fresh water.

Polishing Your Car

Before you polish, remember to cover the glass with newspaper, seal your exhaust tips, and tap off the critical areas. During this step, ensure that your car is free of any contaminant or grit that will affect the polish. You can avoid marring and scratching by using a semi-permanent paint sealant.

The sealant will take about one to two days to dry, and it lasts up to two years. Our tips:

  • Use a battery or air-powered polishing disc that is soft to clear the coat and ensure even distribution.
  • Polishing is done best before your car dries completely after washing.
  • Water helps to protect the car paint during polishing.
  • When using an orbital disc to apply the compound, using even pressure and low movements will ensure consistent results. Start with one panel before moving to the next.

Car Detailing – The Takeaway

Keeping your car looking good shouldn’t be a hard task. However, it needs adequate time to ensure the ideal results. Getting your car detailed is different than taking your vehicle to a drive-through car wash service.

If you don’t have time and the right tools, there are car detailing experts who can do the job for you, like us! Reach out to us today to schedule an appointment!

Auto Glass Repair: 4 Questions to Ask

The revenue forecast for general automotive repair in 2018 is at around $50 billion. While auto glass repair is not one of the most common car repair issues, it still occurs a lot. Unfortunately, car owners don’t always know how to find a good glass repair service.

Common causes of auto glass damage include collisions, poor installation and road debris. Others include winds and hailstorms, extreme temperatures, and low-quality glass. You can also add vandalism and items coming from the vehicle ahead of you.

Since this is a serious issue, you need to find the best auto glass repair service. But how do you go about it?

Questions to Ask Before Accepting Auto Glass Repair

Due to the presence of many auto repair shops in Muskego, Franklin, and the surround areas, it can be difficult to pick out the best one. Moreover, there is a risk of falling victim to a type of car repair scam. Thus, you need to be sure you are dealing with professionals.

Here are four questions to ask before going for auto glass repair:

1. Is the Repair Necessary?

Some auto glass damage may seem small and irrelevant. Considering money doesn’t come easy for everyone, the car owner may decide not to “waste” it on the problem. Yet, this would be a bad idea. That’s because small cracks grow and may put your safety at risk.

These window cracks grow due to expansions caused by fluctuating temperatures. They may also grow because of road debris, car vibrations, and external pressure. It is better to visit a repair shop before the crack grows further.

2. Are They Auto Glass Repair Experts?

The next issue to deal with is finding a professional repair service. For example, if you live in Muskego, you can check online for the best company to fix your problem.

A top repair shop will give you all the details on repairing your auto glass. Their shop will have the latest equipment and well-trained mechanics. Plus, their service will be impeccable.

3. Should Your Repair or Replace?

Cracked or damaged glass is weak. Yet, you may not need to replace the whole thing. A glass technician can fix minor dents and cracks.

It is worth noting as well that it’s better to keep the car maker’s original windscreen. That’s because it has better structural integrity than the replacement windshields. Moreover, poor installation of the replacement may lead to cracks. These cracks may be dangerous for the driver.

You may also want to change your type of auto glass from tempered to laminated. Tempered glasses shatter when broken. Laminated glasses have an inter layer that holds the glass together when broken, which makes laminated glasses the safer option.

4. What Are the Financial and Quality Expectations?

The technicians will explain the costs of repair or replacement. You can check what your car insurer offers on auto glass repair services.

In terms of repair service quality, you should expect a warranty for the work done. The type of glass they use must meet the Traffic Safety Administration guidelines.

5 Most Common Problems Fixed By An Auto Collision Center

Have you recently been in an accident and need repairs done on your car? If you’re one of over 120,000 Wisconsinites that’s been in an accident this year, you’ll need to get your car serviced. Here are the five most common problems fixed by an auto collision center.

technician repairing vehicle with body damage

Front End Damage

It snowed last night and you’re in a rush to get to work this morning. You pull to the end of your driveway and the roads look clear. As you start to drive down the road, you hit a patch of black ice, and despite your best efforts, drive ever so slowly into the telephone pole at the end of the block.

Not only is the bumper smooshed, but your grille and left headlight are smashed. Because lights, airbag deployment systems, and safety systems are often attached to the front bumper, it’s important to have a professional repair the front end of your car.

Rear End Damage

You’re trying to get out of the busy grocery store parking lot while the kids are screaming. You just want to get home and grab a beer. You reverse out of the spot quickly, so quickly that you don’t see the little yellow parking pole that the rear end of your car is now wrapped around.

With over 1.7 million rear-end collisions per year, they are the most common type of automobile accident in the U.S. Similar to front-end collision damage, the bumper, lights, and safety systems can be damaged. Reverse cameras can also take a hit.

Your local auto collision center can ensure that all of these systems are repaired along with the bodywork required.

Paint Scratches/Vandalism

You head over to Lambeau for the Packers vs. Bears game. You have a great time at the game watching the Packers trounce the Bears. Heading back to the car, you see that a Bears fan did not appreciate all of your Packers flags and bumper stickers. Their displeasure has been keyed into the side of your car.

While some of these scratches may be able to be covered with a touch-up pen, deeper scratches require professional help. Depending on the depth of the scratches, the entire panel may need to be replaced. Your local auto collision center can help with that.

Cracked Windshield

Driving down Highway 41/45 right by Lannon Road, a large chunk of gravel from the truck ahead of you bounces out of the truck bed and smacks into your windshield. It leaves a small gouge that quickly spreads into cracks.

While tempered glass windshields are designed to sustain considerable force, it can only withstand so much. The good news is that smaller cracks normally cost about $100 to fix. Larger cracks may require a windshield replacement.

Suspension Damage

Heading back from a very successful fishing day at the lake with your buddies, you’re not paying a lot of attention to the dirt road you’re driving on. Suddenly you hit a pothole so deep, all of you, including the cooler of fish, are airborne. Your suspension is shot.

Suspension damage can be anything from replacing a broken shock absorber to replacing the entire suspension system. Professionals at your local auto collision center can assess the damage and give you an estimate on what it will take to fix it.

Your Local Auto Collision Center Can Help

If you’ve been in an accident or have sustained some vehicle damage, we’d love to be able to help get you and your vehicle back on the road. Contact us today for an estimate.

How to Choose A Company That Offers 24 Hour Towing in Franklin

Having a breakdown late at night can be frightening, especially if you’re alone. Aside from the inconvenience, you’re completely helpless.

Finding a reliable towing company that provides service around the clock gives you peace of mind. It’s nice to know there’s a company you can trust when the unexpected happens. But what if you don’t have a company in mind? Whether you’re stuck on the side of the road or just want to prepare for a breakdown before it happens, there are a few things you need to look for.

car being loaded onto a tow truck

Let’s go over some ways to find 24 hour towing in your area.

A Local Reputation

If you need a tow truck, you need it immediately. When searching for a towing company, make sure you search for one in your city so you know they’ll get there quickly.

Once you search for a local company online, take a look at their website and make sure they offer 24 hour service. It’s also a good idea to take a look at how long they’ve been in business in your area. A reliable company will have strong roots in the community.

Most businesses now have a listing on Google Maps or a Google Business listing. These are geographically specific, so make sure you enter your location when searching online.

Check Out Online Reviews

Online reviews are a great way to determine what kind of service a business provides. When people have a good experience working with an organization, they like to let others know.

Make sure and check customer reviews online and avoid a business that has too many negative comments. Don’t risk getting bad service and then realizing the next day that you could’ve avoided it by reading reviews.

You should also look for testimonials on a towing service’s website. Lots of testimonials mean they provide consistent service. Also, check for accreditation with the Better Business Bureau.

Competitive Pricing

When you call a 24 hour towing service, make sure you ask about the total price up-front. Some companies will quote a price and then tack on additional fees once the work is done.

You also want to make sure their prices are competitive. Some disreputable towing companies overcharge, knowing that you’re in a bind and will pay more.

It helps to shop around and get quotes from other businesses in your area.

Experience Counts

Aside from getting there fast, you need to know that a 24 hour towing service knows what they’re doing. This means drivers that are trained and have experience with all sorts of situations.

Depending on the size, some vehicles are more difficult to tow than others. An experienced driver will know how to handle large vans or trucks as well as compact cars. They’ll also know how to deal with your vehicle if it’s in a tight spot or positioned awkwardly.

Don’t be afraid to ask about their driver’s experience when you call for service.
